The Round Britain 12 (RB12) marathon has been cancelled and is being deferred until 2014. It has come as no surprise as a spokesman for RB12 announced more than 2 weeks ago that unless they got more entries by the end of March, the race would not go ahead.
Due to start in June, only 19 entries remained on the list and even some of those were in doubt. Almost certainly the recession has played a part in RB12’s downfall despite tens of thousands of pounds being spent on the project. Originally it was to feature 50 boats, 50 cars and 50 aeroplanes racing around Britain’s coastline. There are people who want to race, perhaps just not in 2012. The only other long distance race now on the horizon is the Cowes – Monte Carlo marathon in 2013.
