The disappointment of yesterday’s engine problems were short lived for the Belgian 2B1 Racing Team as Furnibo, the Mercury-powered Fountain returned to form, taking the third and final race and the UIM Siracusa Ocean Grand Prix Evo title ahead of Lucas Oil. The race had looked to be a foregone conclusion, with Furnibo building a substantial lead on the opening lap, but Michael Silfverberg and Nigel Hook in Lucas Oil began to unleash the potential of the Silverhook boat and close the gap. 2011 Ocean Grand Prix at Siracusa: changes in Evo standings
Saturday’s Evo result in the UIM Siracusa Ocean Grand Prix has changed following a protest against the winning boat which was upheld. The result is disqualification of Lucas Oil Scandinavian Offshore Challenge. Hercules Sägemann, piloted by Sigi Greve and Douglas Verbanck now take the win and into title contention as the UIM Ocean Grand Prix World Championship arrives at the business-end of the season. Saturday 11 June 2011, Valletta, Malta: As the green flag flew and the boats, complete with rooster tails, blasted into the distance, a new dawn signalled for international endurance racing and a new day for the crews; the waiting was over and a world championship title was at stake. By the end of the first ever race in the newly formed UIM-OGP World Endurance Championship, Furnibo from Belgium, piloted by Pierre Colpin and Frank Hemelaar had taken the spoils and set the standards for the campaign ahead. Valletta, Malta, Friday 10th June 2011: For Sigi Greve, owner and throttleman of Searex, the German offshore powerboat racing team, today’s battle for Pole Position in Valletta harbour can’t come soon enough. Alongside co-pilot Douglas Verbanck (see picture), Greve will take on all-comers in pursuit of a win in the Malta Ocean Grand Prix, the inaugural event of the OGP Powerboat World Championship. His boat, Hercules Sägemann, has been out of the water for seven months and now Greve is raring to go and optimistic that the team are ready to take an historic victory. (more…)
